Design and Developement of Intelligent PIGs and In-Line Inspection Services

Segaltech is proud of having the technology of design and manufacturing different types of intelligent PIGs in Iran. This is the only Iranian company that has developed the technology and know-how of intelligent PIGs and ILI tools in Iran and has been able to commercialize emerging technologies in this field. At the moment, Segaltech possesses the technology of HR MFL (high resolution MFL), HR TFI (high resolution TFI) and EGP (Electronic geometry PIG) tools and is supposed to unveil new intelligent tools by the end of 2020.

Intelligent PIGs are modern and advanced electromechanical tools which are able to pass through the pipelines (oil, gas and petrochemical pipelines) in different sizes to detect and identify various types of anomalies such as metal loss, corrosion, crack, dent and ovalty. Intelligent PIGs carry out the process of inspection in the presence of fluid and there is no need to shut down the pipeline and purge a large volume of fluid. High resolution PIGs are able to detect and identify majority of defects and anomalies within the pipeline and the accuracy of them is quite higher than standard resolution tools.

Segaltech has served many big oil and gas companies as clients with in-line inspection services and diverse range of peripheral and complementary services since 2007. This company has also had partnership and JV cooperation with several leading and reputed international companies in order to provide cutting-edge technology, products and services for clients.

In addition to In-Line Inspection (ILI) services this company provides following services for the customers:
  • - Design and development of application-specific inspection tools
  • - Giving consultation to clients about pipeline cleaning, gauging and necessity of in-line inspection
  • - Pipeline preparation for intelligent inspection
  • - Monitoring the pipeline conditions using smart cleaning PIGs in a quite cost-effective manner
  • - Providing data-driven services such as FFS (fitness for service) and FFP (fitness for purpose) or any other required analysis

Smart Metering and Data Analysis

A smart meter provides the objective tracking of utility energy consumption that occurs on the system or outlet it is attached to. For example, a smart meter connected to a natural gas line tracks the volume of gas consumed by the subscriber. The "smart" feature of the meter lets it control the flow of the resource being used, such as natural gas, water or electricity. The smart aspect also allows the meter to be controlled remotely.

Smart metering is a way for businesses to keep track of how much energy they're using so they can adjust their usage if necessary. In addition to measuring usage, smart meters record a variety of data points on consumption, including when a resource is being used, how much is being used at a time and where it's being directed. Through an internet or wireless connection, the data is relayed to a console, where you can see a breakdown of the data.

Many electric, gas, water and other utility companies have embraced smart metering as an efficient method of tracking usage across their customer bases to better determine costs and infrastructure needs. Smart metering can give both utilities and their customers better ideas of how usage affects their costs and help them determine new strategies to save money.

Though smart metering is relatively new, there are already many applications for the technology. The internet of things (IoT) field has taken advantage of smart metering to expand a network of interconnected devices producing a massive amount of data.
Because smart metering is a newer way to track energy usage, in many markets it's an optional installation for businesses from their utility providers. Although utilities may charge for the installation, the extra cost may be worth it for businesses because it allows them to adjust their usage to save on energy costs.

The direct benefit of smart metering is the precise knowledge of your business's energy and other utility usage. Most smart meters tie directly into an interface that gives you an exact readout of your usage, breaking it down by the time of day, day of the week and month. Having this information at your fingertips can help you make better decisions about your usage and keep up-to-date records of your resource usage.

Getting a better idea of how much you're consuming at any given time can inspire you to launch initiatives to reduce consumption. Some interfaces correlate usage with a monetary measurement, like a rating of watts per hour, allowing you to see how much electricity is costing you by the minute.

Industrial Control Systems (ICS)

Industrial control system (ICS) is a technical term used to describe the integration of hardware and software with network connectivity in order to support critical infrastructure. ICS technologies include, but are not limited to, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and distributed control systems (DCS), industrial automation and control systems (IACS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), programmable automation controllers (PACs), remote terminal units (RTUs), control servers, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and sensors.

Historically, most machinery and engineering components used in manufacturing and the operation of power plants, water and wastewater plants, transport industries and other critical infrastructures were dumb, and those that were computerized typically used proprietary protocols. The networks they belonged to were air-gapped and protected from the outside world. This has changed over the years and components of today's ICSs are often connected directly or indirectly to the internet.

Advances in smart sensor technology and wireless networking have made the blending of operational technology (OT) with information technology (IT) desirable and cost-effective. Despite the benefits of increased speed, better responsiveness to conditions and improved reliability that IT/OT convergence had brought, however, there are drawbacks in terms of security.

As remote terminal units (RTU) used to control the process have become more intelligent and advanced and as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT continue to grow, it becomes increasingly important  for companies to protect ICSs from security threats.

In fourth generation of SCADA systems, Combining SCADA with the cloud and IoT provides SCADA systems with an alternative to PLCs and the use of data modeling and complex algorithms.

Even if direct command and control is not necessary, substantial value can be gained by gathering the available data so it can be analyzed to reveal energy usage, perform condition monitoring, and help discover other trends. When problems are discovered early and addressed before escalation, money can be saved and downtime avoided.

With years of experience and the best experts, Segaltech can provide the best solutions for design and implementation of industrial control systems in different fields including oil, gas, water, petrochemical and power plants.

Cathodic Protection Management System (CPMS)
Cathodic protection is one of the prevalent and well-known techniques to protect pipelines, tanks and other metallic structures against the corrosion. In this method, direct electrical potential is injected into the pipeline (or other structures to be protected) by an electrical rectifier. A complete and perfect protection is achieved when all parts of cathodic protection system work properly and correctly and the drain point potential is set to an appropriate value. For this purpose, it is necessary to monitor and control the pipe-to-soil potential and set rectifier output voltage in order to reach optimum protection level for structure. Also, in case of any failure in part of cathodic protection system such as rectifier or connections, it should be detected and fixed as soon as possible to prevent any pipeline damage.

Cathodic protection management system (CPMS) performs all necessary and mandatory operations which are crucial to maintain the performance of protection system in high and reliable level. Lack of attention to control and monitoring rectifier and other important parts, causes decrease in protection level and serious damages to the pipeline (or any other protected structure). In fact, CPMS monitors and controls all the parameters of protection system automatically. The important parameters which are controlled and monitored include rectifier output voltage, rectifier output current, pipeline-to-soil potential, temperature and humidity of environment, transformer temperature, oil level of transformer, input power status of rectifier and many other important parameters.

CPMS consists of two main parts: hardware part and software part. Hardware part is a complex unit which is installed in cathodic protection station. Software part is also a comprehensive software package which is installed on main server in central control station. The software package called Smart Protect® in addition to hardware unit and all ancillary parts have been designed and implemented by Segaltech company. A good news about this system (CPMS) is that it can be implemented on all types of old and existing rectifiers in pipelines or tanks.
